Prior to shipment, highly trained factory experts using accurate state-of-the-art equipment conduct testing on all Waukesha® transformers in accordance with the latest ANSI, IEEE and/or NEMA standards. SPX Waukesha verifies its test system accuracy for conformance with the requirements of C57.12.00-2006, Section 9.4.

Routine Tests Performed on All Transformers

  • Ratio and Polarity
  • Power Factor
  • Winding Resistance
  • No-Load Loss and Excitation Current
  • Load Loss and Impedance
  • CT Current, Ratio and Polarity
  • IEEE/ANSI Standard Impulse Test (Class II Transformers)
  • Quality Control Impulse Test (Class I Transformers)
  • Applied Potential
  • IEEE/ANSI Induced Voltage Test at 1.5x Rated for 1 Hour with Corona Detection (Class II Transformers)
  • Quality Control Induced Voltage Test with Corona Detection (Class I Transformers)
  • Control Functions and Wiring
  • Dissolved Gas Analysis
  • Dew Point (only "routine" for transformers shipped without oil)

A number of Optional/Special Tests may be performed when requested, at an additional cost. These may include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Temperature Rise
  • Time Constant Temperature Rise
  • Overload Temperature Rise
  • Switching Surge Impulse
  • Sound Level
  • Zero Sequence Impedance
  • Frequency Response Analysis

SPX Transformer Solutions maintains permanent records of all test results, and certified test reports are provided to the customer.

Witness Testing of Transformers

Both SPX Waukesha transformer manufacturing facilities welcome hundreds of customers to our plants each year who personally witness the testing of their units. Comfortable customer lounges with high speed internet connections, cable television and a variety of refreshments allow people the opportunity to work and relax during test transitions and employee breaks. Experienced application engineers and others are always available to walk customers through the plants, if desired, explaining our processes and equipment with detailed dialog from those actually manufacturing our transformers on the plant floors.

In addition to the traditional on-site witness test, SPX Waukesha offers virtual witness testing by way of high definition webcams. Our Windows into Waukesha® WebTest® program launched in 2008 with live demonstrations at the IEEE T&D show. Since then, more than four dozen customers have experienced the benefits of this unique opportunity that allows them to view their transformer on SPX Waukesha's test floors via a secure internet connection. Since this can be done from a physical site of their choice, customers' travel time and costs are reduced while also allowing them the flexibility to work on other projects from their own offices between transformer tests and during downtime. Since cameras are also located throughout both facilities' manufacturing plants, virtual plant tours can be done while waiting for test setups.
